Trace Evidence Flashcards
Hair
Slender, thread-like growth originating from the skin in mammals
Follicle
Structure from which the hair grows
Keratin
Protein based material from which hairs are made; strengthens hairs due to S-S bonds
Keratinization
The hardening process of hair growth
Three phases of hair growth
Anagen, catagen, telogen
Anagen
Actively growing phase, follicle produces new cells and pushes them up the hair shaft, 80-90% of hairs
Melanin
Pigment, small granules that give hair their color
Melanocytes
Cells that produce melanin
Catagen
Transitional phase of hair growth where the follicle begins to shut down the production of cells and the root condenses, 2% of hairs
Telogen
Resting phase of the hair follicle, 10-18% of hairs
Three main structural elements in a hair
Cuticle, cortex, medulla
