Pathology Flashcards
Cause of death
Conditions that caused death, ex- heart attack due to heart disease
Manner of death
Homicide, suicide, natural, accidental
Medical examiner
Physician, special pathology training
Mechanical trauma
Occurs when the force applied to a tissue exceeds mechanical or tensile strength of that tissue- blunt or sharp force
Blunt force trauma
Caused by nonsharp objects. Produce lacerations
Lacerations
Tears in tissues
Sharp force trauma
From sharp objects that pierce the skin and produce incised wounds
Exsanguination
Fatal loss of blood
Contusion
Accumulation of blood in the tissues
Hematoma
Blood tumor or extreme contusion
Asphyxia
Mechanical trauma in which the body is deprived of oxygen
Stippling
Small red dots caused by unburned gunpowder that penetrates the skin and burns it
Thermal trauma
Hypo/hyperthermia
Rigor mortis
Stiffening of the body after death, begins 2-6 h, ends around 24 h, caused by calcium channels opening
Livor mortis
The settling of blood due to gravity after the heart no longer circulates it through the body, peaks at 3-4 h
