Toxicology Flashcards
What is toxicology?
The study of adverse effects of chemicals on organisms
How many homocides today are commuted via poisoning?
Roughly 6%
What is necrosis?
Non-programmed cell death
How are alcohols defined?
By having one or more hydroxyl groups
What does ethanol do to the body?
It’s a central nervous system depressant.
What happens to methanol in the body?
It gets turned into formaldehyde.
What does toxicology cover?
Any non-food item in an organism

All drugs and poisons in the body, the quantity of drugs and poisons at time of death, which metabolites are present, what interactions between drugs are present, history and patterns of drug dependence and addiction, the role tolerance might play.
What is pharmakinetics?
The study of how drugs move around the body
What are the four processes of pharmakinetics?
Absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination
What are drugs absorbed through?
A tissue barrier
What are drugs distributed by?
The blood stream
How are drugs generally eliminated?
Through urination
What is synergism?
When two drugs work together and increase each other’s effects.
What is an antigen?
