Topic 9 - Posterior Pituitary Flashcards
If hypogonadism, what should you check?
PRL
If a test was done on serum and testosterone, LH and FSH were all low what is the problem?
You could have hypopituitarism
A test was done and the found out that testosterone was low but LH and FSH was high, what do you have?
Pituitary target gland failure
Where do neurons originate and where do they project to?
- Hypothalamus
- Posterior pituitary
What do neurons deliver?
Hormones
What is the main function of preprohormones in VP?
Osmoregulation (water balance) and pressure regulation (vasoconstriction)
What is the main function of preprohormones in OT? (2)
- Uterine contraction 2. Milk ejection
What is the main functions of OT in women? (3)
- Milk ejection
- Uterine smooth muscle contraction during labor
- Mother (maternal behaviour)
What is the main function of OT in males?
Facilitates sperm transport in ejection
What happens to OT in stress responses?
OT inhibits the CRH/VP mediated ACTH release (in the brain)
What are 3 main functions of VP?
- Osmoregulation (water balance)
- Regulation of blood pressure/volume
- Stress response
What happens when VP binds to VR in blood vessels?
Increase in pressure by vascular constriction
What does VR stimulate?
PLC
What are 3 things that characterize diabetes insipidus?
- Excretion of large vol of urine (hypotonic)
- Dilute urine
- Tasteless urine
What effects for diabetes insipidus have?
- Messes up ion balance
2. Causes thirst and dehydration
