1. Prepare to give up everything -> drop everything and follow him without question (mark 1:16-20)
2. Self sacrificial -> mark 8:34 - 36 jesus says ‘ if anyone wants to come with me, he must forget self, carry his cross + follow me. For whoever wants to save his own life will lose it, but whoever wants to lose his life for me and for the gospel will save it’ ie eternal life in heaven

2. Christianity is not an easy way to live, jesus is clear about risks, but is an honour to follow in footsteps of disciples + show gratitude to jesus for being sacrifice

1. Jesus calls us today as he did to ppl in past -> there are disciples in modern 🌍 + we have same duties (eg called to be monk, priest etc)
2. He doesnt discriminate -> diff ppl from diff backgrounds were called to be a disciple so anyone today can be a disciple
3. He makes demands on his disciples - not an easy journey and full of hardship + sacrifice

1. Discipleship leads them towards particular vocation eg monk/nun / priest
2. Discipleship calls them to act in service of others eg doctor or charity worker
3. Some feel that they are being called to be missionaries -> jesus tells disciples to go out and evangelise
4. Others are lead to set a good example of what it means to be Christian to others at all times in life and follow teachings
