- Evangelise = spread word of god + convert ppl
- Follow natural 🍁 law + bring up catholic kids 👧 👦
- Could be involved in church choir 🎤 🎵 🗣
- Could be servers (ppl who carry candles + cross during service)
- Lead prayers or run Sunday skl 🏫
- Be a lector (reading 📖 in church services)
- Visit sick, could bring consecrated bread + wine to ppl (can’t bless it tho)

Why do the Roman Catholics see the laity in this way?
- Priest called by god to his role - laity also called, but to different role (both r of value ✨)
- Through body of christ is how jesus does his work in world + laity = 98% of church ( 🦵 of christ)
- Vatican 2 = RCC council in 1960s changed way in which church saw laity -> more status today
- Laity work in secular ⛪️ 🚫 places of society interact w/ more ppl than priests 🙏 -> responsible for bringing Christ’s message to whole 🌍
- Priests can’t 💍 -> responsibility for laity to bring up kids w/ catholic faith
What are 4 formal roles that the laity can undertake in the CofE?
- Church wardens -> upkeep of ⛪️ (have to be appointed) services to run smoothly
- Sidesmen -> practical aspects of ⛪️ (welcoming ppl, handing out service sheets, opening + closing doors of ⛪️ etc)
- Lay readers -> took a lay readers course -> can preach, give OUT holy communion, visit sick 🤒 🤮 + give them hc + read banns of marriage 💍
- Lay workers -> youth/children’s worker -> paid
What are 5 things that are non formal that the laity can do in cofe?
- Do bible readings
- Read prayers in a service
- Help w/ youth groups, Sunday skl, crèche
- Run house groups
- Pray w/ others
What are the things that the laity can’t do in cofe?
What only vicar can do = sacraments:
- Marriages
- Baptisms
- Funerals
- Consecrate bread + wine
Why are the laity allowed to do what they can in the cofe?
- Church = body of Christ -> laity should be involved in church life
- Only vicar can do sacraments etc thru ordination but laity can support in other areas
- Ppl have different ✨ that can be used in the ⛪️

- Follow gal 3 = all equal under Christ -> don’t see minister as more important -> everyone can listen to god when making decisions -> can vote on issues
- Imago dei -> all equal
- Minister not ordained ✨-> not different to laity
- God speaks thru anyone 🗣 so anyone can be asked to preach 🎤 📖 if invited by minister
- No transubstantiation -> no consecration of the 🍞 and 🍷 (just a symbol) -> this is why anyone can lead holy communion
What do the quakers 🥣 believe?
Laity -> active role in meetings
Men + women = equal right to contribute if inspired by Holy Spirit
Why do the quakers believe this?
- No leaders bar elders (who have basic role) -> all quakers = same
- Part of god in everyone -> everyone can speak if inspired by 🕊 💖
- No difference between sexes in laity -> sexism contrary to conscience (go back to authority etc)
What are two for arguments for the statement : ‘the laity should be able to do everything that the vicar/priest/minister can do’
- Galatians 3 ‘all equal in eyes of Christ’ -> equality under god, equality in what u can do
- Quakers -> ‘ that of god in everyone’ -> should be able to speak or act if inspired by Holy Spirit, as we all have part of god in us no matter who we are
What are two against arguments for the statement: ‘the laity should be able to do everything the priest/vicar/minister can do’
- Do not have enough authority -> don’t have the 4 yrs + of training in theology + leading a congregation -> wont be able to answer all qs or control the congregation
- Takes away value from sacraments if anyone can administer them, ( a priest/vicar is approved by god when they r ordinated which allows them to do it + be respected)
