Topic 12 Jesus’ Resurrection Flashcards
What happens in the resurrection?
Diff accounts, but in all, there are women that are witness to it
- stone is rolled away
- angels say that jesus has risen
Describe the appearances of jesus in matthew
- appears to women as they are heading off to tell news to disciples
Describe the appearances of jesus in Luke
- Appears to disciples + eats in front of them (emphasises humanity)
- Appears to two disciples on road to Emma us. Don’t recognise him until he blesses bread
Describe appearances of jesus in john
- Appears to Mary Magdalene after peter + beloved disciple have run to tomb and seen it is empty
- Appears to disciples apart from Thomas. Later he appears to Thomas and asks him to touch him, to make Thomas believe that he is alive
What suggests the bodily resurrection of jesus?
- Body gone from tomb
2. In luke jesus eats in front of disciples + tells them to touch him to guarantee that he is real
Explain the significance of the story of doubting thomas
- Thomas represents humanity + symbolic of anyone who doubts, identifiable
- jesus praises those who don’t need physical proof ‘blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe’ (john 20)
Does the resurrection show that god has power over life and death?
Yes
Fundamentalists believe that this is evidence of what will happen to believers as well (bodily resurrection)
What is interesting about the disciples and Mary Magdalene not recognising jesus at first?
Are they traumatised so they do not recognise him, are they not expecting him, does he look different? Didn’t expect him despite what he taught them (referred to body as temple and rebuilding it)
What happens at the great commission?
Jesus says to his disciples: ‘all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go and make disciples of all nations, baptise them in name of father, son and hs, and teach them to observe all commandments’ matthew 28
What is the significance of the great commission
- Telling them to proselytise (evangelise + convert)
- Evangelicals + exclusivists use this to support the view that they must convert others
- Relates to apostolic succession -> passing on authority
What happens during Jesus’ ascension?
Jesus passses on authority to disciples and says that Holy Spirit will come upon them (he ascends and at Pentecost, the hs does above)
What is the importance of Jesus’ ascension?
- Charismatic christians use this to support belief that HS is with them forever
- Ascension means that we can pray to jesus
Significance of jesus today in relation to the resurrection: 4 points
- Resurrection = god’s blessing on everything that jesus did - death wasn’t the end, cos he wasn’t an unfortunate man but son of god
- Resurrection = time of transformation where jesus lives in god as spiritual glorified being
Means that Christians can pray to him directly today
- Resurrection = time of future hope -> we too will have future resurrection
- > for fundamentalists this will be bodily resurrection but for liberals this will be continuation of soul in heaven - For some liberals, jesus didnt rise from dead (no empirical evidence) but meaning is more important - jesus lives on in his teachings
- not a literal event, instead committed to teachings of love + peace that jesus taught
Significance of jesus = great moral teacher
