  4. In John’s gospel he washes disciples feet as an example of how they should love one another

Explain the importance of the last supper

A
  1. Maundy = commandment in Latin -> refers to jesus commanding them to love each other
    - > some priests will wash feet of key congregation to symbolise way in which he is called by god to serve them
  2. Churches celebrate holy communion -> form of obedience to jesus who tells disciples to do this ‘in remembrance of me’ RCC transubstantiation ✨ 🍞 🍷

  1. Jesus prays ‘Father, if it be possible let this cup not touch my lips, but not my will but yours be done’

JESUS 🙏 TO GOD ASKING IF THERE IS ANOTHER WAY - does he have to die, THEN ACCEPTS HIS DEATH IS GOD’S WILL

  1. Humanity of jesus -> deeply distressed + troubled + vulnerable, which makes him relatable
  2. Shows obedience to god -> despite his fear HE MAINTAINS FAITH DESPITE HIS SUFFERING

  2. One disciple draws 🗡 but jesus tells him to put it away as ‘those who live by the sword, die by the word’ this was Simon the zealot

Describe the event of good Friday : Jesus’ trial 👨‍⚖️ (both Matthew and Luke report on this)

  1. Diff gospels = diff accounts of trial
  2. Jesus taken to Sanhedrin (Jewish council) where high priest asks whether he is Christ.
    - > IN MARK jesus says he is and high priest accuses him of blasphemy
  3. he is taken to Pilate who doesn’t see that jesus has done anything wrong
  4. In Luke sent to Herod to be questioned
  5. IMPORTANTLY Pilate then asks crowd whether to release criminal Barabbas (murderer) or jesus -> choose barabbas
  6. Jesus whipped, mocked for being king of Jews by putting crown of thorns on him
  7. Carries cross to Golgotha
  8. Stumbles and Simon of Cyrene pulled out of crowd to continue journey w his cross

What does the trial scene show about jesus?

  • jesus knew punishment = severe but didn’t argue against his accusors
  • knew what his mission was and it had to be fulfilled

Describe the events of the crucifixion (Luke 23)

Good Friday

  1. Jesus forgives penitent (repentant) 🙏 thief 🥷 on the cross ✝️ next to him saying ‘today you will with me in paradise’ 🏝
    - > john’s gospel, jesus ensures that his mother is looked after by a ‘beloved disciple’ ❤️
  2. During three hours jesus on cross -> darkness came over land 🌌
  3. Jesus’ last words = ‘my god, my god why have you forsaken me?’ (Matt/mark) or ‘father into your hands i commend my spirit’ (Luke)
  4. 🏛 curtain tore in two + tombs opened + souls of dead rose up to heaven (Matt)
  5. In Matt and mark centurion🤺 says ‘truly this man was the son of god’
  6. JOHN only -> soldier pierced Jesus’ side w a spear + blood + water came out 🩸 💧

  2. Emphasises that forgiveness can come to someone even at very end of life
