topic 9 - chemistry of the atmosphere (4. air pollution) Flashcards
what is combustion
combustion, a chemical reaction between substances, usually including oxygen and usually accompanied by the generation of heat and light in the form of flame.
what happens during combustion
carbon and hydrogen in these compounds are oxidised so co2 and water vapour are releasedd into the atmosphere
what is complete combustion
when there’s plenty of oxygen all fuel burns
what is incomplete combustion
not enough oxygen so not all fuel burns, solid particles (particulates) made of foot and hydrocarbons are released and carbon monoxide as well as co2 is released.
what problems do particulates cause
if inhaled can get stuck in the lungs and cause damage, respitory problems
bad for environment
what problems can carbon monoxide produce
stop blood from carrying oxygen around body
lack of oxygen leads to fainting
hard to detect as it has no colour or smell
