topic 10 - using resources (9. the haber process) Flashcards
what is the Haber process used for
to manufacture ammonia
how do they obtain the reactants for the Haber process
nitrogen- found in air
hydrogen- comes from reacting natural gas with steam or crude oil
In the Haber process what is used to make ammonia
nitrogen and hydrogen gas in a reversible reaction
what happens to the nitrogen and hydrogen before the are reacted with each other
they are purified
Haber process reaction vessel
hydrogen and nitrogen in 3:1 ratio
what happens after ammonia gas is produced
gas is cooled in condenser and liquidfies
unused nitrogen and hydrogen is recycled
conditions for haber process
450 degrees
pressure: 200 atmospheres
iron catalyst
at lower temperatures what happens to the yield of ammonia
it is greater because the forward reaction is exothermic
why is the temperature increased in Haber process even though it doesn’t increase the yield of ammonia
higher rate of reaction
why is pressure set as high as possible
to have highest yield as possible
what are the three main elements needed by plants
nitrogen
phosphorus
potassium
