topic 1a - atoms, elements, compounds and mixtures (8. more separating techniques) Flashcards
what is filtration
often used if your desired product is an insoluble solid that needs to be separated from a liquid reaction mixture. useful for purification.
describe the process of filtration (insoluble;e solid and a liquid
1) fold a piece of filter paper into a cone.
2) place the filter paper point down into a filter funnel that’s sitting in the neck of a container such as a conical flask.
3) pour the mixture containing the insoluble solid into the funnel lined with the filter paper.
2) the liquid will pass through however the solid will not.
what is crystallisation/evaporation
separating a soluble solid and a solution.
describe the process of evaporation
- pour the solution into an evaporating dish
2) place the evaporating dish on top of a tripod and gauze and place a bunsen burner underneath.
3) slowly heat the solution. The solvent will evaporate and the solution will get more concentrated. eventually solid will start to form.
4) keep evaporating the dish until all you have left is a dry solid.
describe the process of crystallisation
crystallisation is used if the solid does decompose (break down) when heated
- A solution is placed in an evaporating basin and heated with a Bunsen burner.
- The volume of the solution has decreased because some of the water has evaporated. Solid particles begin to form in the basin.
- All the water has evaporated, leaving solid crystals behind.
