topic 1a - atoms, elements, compounds and mixtures (4. compound) Flashcards
what is a compound
when elements react atoms combine with other atoms to form compounds. The atoms of the elements are in fixed proportions throughout the compound, and they are held together with chemical bonds.
what is a mixture?
To make a bond it involves atoms giving away taking or sharing electrons. If the atoms are not bonded its a mixture.
how do compounds form in ionic bonding?
a compound that is formed from a metal and non-metal consists of ions. The metal atoms lose electrons to form positive ions and the non-metal atoms gain electrons to form negative ions. opposite charges are strongly attracted to each other.
how to compounds form in covalent bonding?
a compound formed from non-metals consists of molecules. Each atom shares an electron with the other.
how to reform a compound
once a compound has been formed you cannot separate it by physical processes instead you have to use more chemical reactions to reform the elements
