Topic 9 Flashcards
What are microaerophiles?
organisms that grow at low oxygen levels
Rank mesophiles, hyperthermophiles, psychrophiles, and thermophiles in order of greatest to smallest living temperature.
hyperthermophiles, thermophiles, mesophiles, and psychrophiles
What are the cardinal temperature of an organism?
the minimum, optimum, and maximum temperature
What is the heat-shock response?
rapid temperature change during growth that activates stress response
What are microbial chaperones?
protein products that maintain protein shape and enzymes that change membrane composition
What is water activity?
a measure of how water is available, high [solute] have low water activity
What water activity do most bacteria require?
greater than 0.91
How is osmolarity and water activity related?
inversly
How do hypertonic media minimize osmotic stress?
compatible solutes binds to water so it can’t leave
How do hypotonic media minimize osmotic stress?
turgor pressor and mechanosensitive channels that leak water out
How much salt do halophiles require?
2 to 4 M NaCl (10 - 20%)
What are aerotolerant anaerobes?
can grow in O2 but don’t need it
What are facultative anaerobes?
can live with or without oxygen
