Topic 12 Flashcards
What are crenarchaea?
phyla that contains organisms that grow in a wide range of temperature and pH
What are methanogens?
organisms that produce methane from CO2 and other organic molecules, they are obligate anaerobes, and have a cell wall made up of pseudomurien, proteins, or sulfate sugars and an s-layer
What are euryarchaota?
phlya with a very broad range of metabolism
Describe Ferroplasma acidiphilum.
acidophiles that have no cell wall and oxidize sulfur from FeS2 to produce H2SO4
Describe the pyrodictum sp.
barophilic vent hyperthermophiles (crenarchaeota), contains genes from all three kingdoms, reduces sulfur to H2S for energy, is disked-shaped, and contains cannulae that connect disks
What are nanoarchaea?
archaea with a very small genomes that are obligate symbionts to host ignococcus species and shoe evidence of coevolution
Describe sulfuolobus.
a type of crenarchaeota that has a no cell wall but an S layer, has a flagella, has a tetraether composed membrane, is an aerobe, and an acidophilic hyperthermophile
Why do haloarchaea appear red?
due to bacterioruberin which protects cells from light
