Topic 10 Flashcards
What is oxidative phosphorylation?
the oxidation of an e- donor and reduction of an e- acceptor through the use of the ETC to generate ATP
Can eukarya respirate aerobically and anaeobically?
no only aerobically
How is nitrate reduced to become nitrogen gas so nitrogen fixers can fix it to ammonium?
Through dissimilatory denitrification (nitrate reduction): nitrate -> nitrite -> nitric oxide -> nitrous oxide -> nitrogen gas
Give an example of a photoautotrophic bacterium?
cyanobacterium - blue/green algae
Describe glycolysis in 2 phases.
1) Activitation phase
- uses 2 ATP to phosphorylate glucose into fructose 1,6 bisphosphate which is broken down to 2 G3P
2) Energy payoff phase
- G3P generates 4 ATP, 2 NADH, and 2 pyruvates
