TOPIC 8:REDEMPTION Flashcards
What is redemption?
Jesus made up for Adam and eve’s sin - and brought humans back into relationship with God.
What was the Fall?
When Adam + Eve changed from obedience to God to disobedience by eating the forbidden fruit.
What is original Sin?
Catholic teaching that the Fall cause all people to be born with a tendency to commit Sin (reject God’s will).
Why does sin exist? ( 3 steps).
- God gave humans freewill as he wants them to choose to follow him
- however, people sometimes misuse their freewill (Sin)
- so sin has to exist, in order for people to have free will
What are 3 points on the importance of Jesus’ death?
1- Jesus shows love + obedience to God the father setting us an example to follow
2- Jesus restored the relationship between God and Humans (veil torn in the great temple)
3- Jesus restored cosmic order (order in the universe) making God’s creation perfect again
What are 2 points on the importance of Jesus’ Burial?
1- Jesus went to hell and freed those killed before and rose to heaven with them (Moses,Abraham)
2- Jesus promised that his people will follow where he has gone - so God is with people even in death
What are 3 points and a quote on the importance of Jesus’ Resurrection?
1- shows that Jesus was victorious over Sin,suffering and death
2-life after death is now possible (sin + death overcomed)
3-most important death in christianity - told in all 4 gospels
Quote(st. Paul) : If christ had not been raised, your faith is pointless and you are in your sins
3 ways Redemption is shown in the bible?
Jesus the example: sets an example through obedience to the father despite his brutal crucifixion
Jesus the restorer: restored relationship between God and humans also Jesus restored ‘cosmic order’
Jesus the victor: Jesus defeated suffering, Sin and death - humans can share in this to (go to heaven)
What is pentecost?
The coming of the holy spirit.
What happened during pentecost?
What is salvation?
Being saved (or freed) from sin - going to heaven
Jesus redeemed humans - making salvation possible for individuals
Points about Salvation in the past, present and future?
Past - Jesus’ death, burial, resurrection and ascension was in the past making it possible for humans to go to heaven
Present - we choose whether to accept or reject salvation by following jesus teachings and The holy spirit guides people towards salvation(heaven).
Future- Salvation will be completed at the end of time - sin and death completely destroyed
3 points on the heavenly banquet
- bible promises a victory celebration, everyone in heaven has a meal when salvation is complete
- the mass is a chance to experience this heavenly banquet
- therefore mass inspires us to work towards salvation every day (love, peace, forgiveness)
What is St irenaeus metaphor to help us think about redemption ( 2 points and the name)
‘Tree of the cross’
- the tree created the need for salvation … caused the broken relationship between god humans
- the cross brought salvation through Jesus death’, it restored relationship between god and humans
What is St Anselm metaphor to help us think about redemption ( 2 points and the name
‘Jesus paying ransom to save humans from sins’
- after the fall, humans became slaves to sin
- Jesus paid a ransom for the sins of all humans
What is conscience
The voice of God in peoples hearts, guiding them to make the right choices
Quote by second Vatican council about conscience
’ The most secret core of a man…. where he is alone with God’
The two sides of the conscience
- Natural instincts - we instinctively know the right thing to do (natural law)
- Needs to be educated - Shaped, developed so we interrupt it correctly (listening to others, church, bible)
How is redemption shown in catholic Mass ( 2 point with ideas coming from words)
For catholics, the mass is the ‘source and summit’ of christian life.’
Source - beginning of christian life
Summit - aim of christian life
Mass - reenactment of Christ’s sacrifice, so is the highest form of prayer
How the parts of mass reflect understanding of Redemption
Readings - through gospel we hear what God wants of us through Jesus’ words and actions.
Offertory - bread and wine sign as thanksgiving
Eucharistic prayer - transubstantiation shows christ is present. This occurs when priest says Eucharist prayer(words Jesus said at last supper.)
Our father - believers call God ‘our father’ and we say the prayer that christ taught ‘our father’.
Holy communion - we receive christ himself - giving strength to resist sin and live everyday like christ leading to salvation.
Lamb of God - prayer before communion reminds us Jesus’ death was the one and only sacrifice needed to atone for sins. And Jesus’ sacrifice saved all people.
End - christians sent out into the world to share the presence of christ through their actions.
4 ways how christ is present in catholic mass
- Consecrates bread and wine
- Gods word (bible readings)
- The priest (acts in person as christ)
- The worshippers, as the body of christ
Quote showing how Christ is present through The worshippers - Matthew 18:20
‘For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them’.
How different christian denominations understand the eucharist
Orthodox :
Christ is truly present in bread and wine however takes placed behind Iconostasis ( highly decorated screen) as consecration is too holy to be seen.
COE:
bread and wine symbolise body and blood - christ is present in the community (heart and mind) that shares the eucharist
Non conformists:
Eucharist is to remember the last supper (not to re-enact) with the bible the most central part of worship - christ is present in the word of God
Quakers:
Don’t celebrate any form of eucharist. With christ present through peoples prayer and actions when they serve God and the people
Importance of eucharist of the denominations
1.- orthodox
2.- catholic
3.- anglicans
4.- baptists/methodists
5.quakers
What is eucharistic adoration ( 2 points)
Short service - in which consecrated bread is adored and praised.
Also called Benediction (blessing) as a person is blessed with the real presence of christ.
What happens during eucharistic adoration/benediction
- Consecrated bread is put in monstrance and lifted up by the priest
- Incense is burnt - symbolysing prayers going to God
- Does not take place during mass
4 ways church architecture inspires worship
- the care taken in decoration shows devotion/respect for God
- it’s beauty shows god’s glory and qualities
- statues of saints encourage people to follow their example
- crucifix and stations of the cross inspire reflection on Jesus suffering
Differences between churches built before and after 1965
1.- before built facing Jerusalem now wherever
2.- mass in latin now in local language
3- altar on east wall now closer to people and more forward/centre of church
4- built in cross shape now whatever shape or a circle
Contrasting features of a church ( other denominations)
Baptists/methodists may have table instead of altar as reminder of the last supper - “do this in memory of me”
Other christians use an empty cross to show Christ’s victory over death and others use a risen christ focuses on christ as the risen, glorified saviour. Rather than a crucifix
Other denominations have lectern in the centre instead of altar
