What is conscience

A

The voice of God in peoples hearts, guiding them to make the right choices

17
Q

Quote by second Vatican council about conscience

A

’ The most secret core of a man…. where he is alone with God’

18
Q

The two sides of the conscience

A
  1. Natural instincts - we instinctively know the right thing to do (natural law)
  2. Needs to be educated - Shaped, developed so we interrupt it correctly (listening to others, church, bible)
19
Q

How is redemption shown in catholic Mass ( 2 point with ideas coming from words)

A

For catholics, the mass is the ‘source and summit’ of christian life.’
Source - beginning of christian life
Summit - aim of christian life
Mass - reenactment of Christ’s sacrifice, so is the highest form of prayer

20
Q

How the parts of mass reflect understanding of Redemption

A

Readings - through gospel we hear what God wants of us through Jesus’ words and actions.
Offertory - bread and wine sign as thanksgiving
Eucharistic prayer - transubstantiation shows christ is present. This occurs when priest says Eucharist prayer(words Jesus said at last supper.)
Our father - believers call God ‘our father’ and we say the prayer that christ taught ‘our father’.
Holy communion - we receive christ himself - giving strength to resist sin and live everyday like christ leading to salvation.
Lamb of God - prayer before communion reminds us Jesus’ death was the one and only sacrifice needed to atone for sins. And Jesus’ sacrifice saved all people.
End - christians sent out into the world to share the presence of christ through their actions.

21
Q

4 ways how christ is present in catholic mass

A
  1. Consecrates bread and wine
  2. Gods word (bible readings)
  3. The priest (acts in person as christ)
  4. The worshippers, as the body of christ
22
Q

Quote showing how Christ is present through The worshippers - Matthew 18:20

A

‘For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them’.

23
Q

How different christian denominations understand the eucharist

A

Orthodox :
Christ is truly present in bread and wine however takes placed behind Iconostasis ( highly decorated screen) as consecration is too holy to be seen.

COE:
bread and wine symbolise body and blood - christ is present in the community (heart and mind) that shares the eucharist

Non conformists:
Eucharist is to remember the last supper (not to re-enact) with the bible the most central part of worship - christ is present in the word of God

Quakers:
Don’t celebrate any form of eucharist. With christ present through peoples prayer and actions when they serve God and the people

24
Q

Importance of eucharist of the denominations

A

1.- orthodox
2.- catholic
3.- anglicans
4.- baptists/methodists
5.quakers

25
Q

What is eucharistic adoration ( 2 points)

A

Short service - in which consecrated bread is adored and praised.

Also called Benediction (blessing) as a person is blessed with the real presence of christ.

26
Q

What happens during eucharistic adoration/benediction

A
  1. Consecrated bread is put in monstrance and lifted up by the priest
  2. Incense is burnt - symbolysing prayers going to God
  3. Does not take place during mass
27
Q

4 ways church architecture inspires worship

A
  • the care taken in decoration shows devotion/respect for God
  • it’s beauty shows god’s glory and qualities
  • statues of saints encourage people to follow their example
  • crucifix and stations of the cross inspire reflection on Jesus suffering
28
Q

Differences between churches built before and after 1965

A

1.- before built facing Jerusalem now wherever
2.- mass in latin now in local language
3- altar on east wall now closer to people and more forward/centre of church
4- built in cross shape now whatever shape or a circle

29
Q

Contrasting features of a church ( other denominations)

A

Baptists/methodists may have table instead of altar as reminder of the last supper - “do this in memory of me”

Other christians use an empty cross to show Christ’s victory over death and others use a risen christ focuses on christ as the risen, glorified saviour. Rather than a crucifix

Other denominations have lectern in the centre instead of altar
