Topic 8 -Momentum Flashcards
What is momentum ?
A meaure of how difficult it is to stop omething that i moving .
What is they key idea behind momentum ?
-All moving object have momentum BUT
-if an obect is not moving , then the momentum is zero .
What is the equation for momentum ?
Momentum = mass*velocity
(kgm/s) (kg) (m/s)
TRIANGLE
P+M*V
PRACTICE QUESTION
If a car has a mas of 1000 kg and i not moving what is the momentum .
same question with 20m/ speed moving
As the car is not moving at all , the momentum must be zero .
p=mv 100020.
What is the conservation of momentum ?
In a closed system , the total momentum before an event is equal to the total momentum after an event .
An example with a car and a van .. (1)
-Van is travelling towards a atioanry car .
-Becaue the van is moving , it ha momentum in the forward direction .
An example with a car and a van .(3)
-The moemntum of the van is it mass , multiplied by it velocity .
-The stationary car has no momentum asits not moving .
-Now the van collides with the car .
An example with a car and a van (4)
Both the van and the car move togetehr ata lwoer velcoity , than the intial velocity of the van .
-The total momentum of the van and car togeher i the Same a the inital momentum of the van itself .
SO , THE TOTAL momentum BEFORE the collision is the ame a the total moemntum , after thre vollion , AKA the mometnum ha been CONSERVED .
Cannonball example
Beforre the cannon fires , the cannon and the cannonball are not moving . So the total momentum before firing equals zero .
Canonball example (1)
-When the cannon fires , the cannonball i moving at a very large velocity . So the cannonball ha momentum in the forward direction /
Cannonball example (2)
At the ame time , the cannon recoils (move backwards) , this means that the cannon ha momentum acting in the backward direction .
Cannonbal example (3)
The backwards momntum of the cannon , equals the forward momentum of the cannonball .
-This means that the total momentumafter firing is zero . Showing that momentum has been conserved .
CONSERVATTION OF MOMENTUM EXAMPLE
-A van travelleing at 30m/ and ha mass od 2000 kg
it collides with a STATIONARY car that has a mas of 800 kg .
-Both van and car continue moving togetehr ,c alculate hte velcoity of the van and car together .
REMEBER MOMENTUM IS ALWAYS Conserved .
