Topic 7- Types of selection Flashcards
What are the 3 types of selection?
Stabilising selection
Disruptive selection
Directional selection
What is stabilising selection?
natural selection that keeps allele frequencies relatively constant over generations
What does stabilising selection mean?
things stay as they are unless there is a change in the environment
Give an example of stabilising selection
Human birth weights
What is directional selection?
natural selection that produces a gradual change in allele frequencies over several generations
What is directional selection usually caused by?
-a change in environment / selection pressures
- a new allele has appeared in the population that is advantageous
What is disruptive selection?
natural selection that maintains high frequencies of two different sets of alleles (individuals with intermediate phenotypes or alleles are selected against)
What does disruptive selection cause?
polymorphism
Define polymorphism
the continued existence of two or more distinct phenotypes in species
Where does disruptive selection occur?
an environment that shows variation
