Topic 7- Natural selection Flashcards
What is exponential growth
If all the offspring of every individual survived to adulthood and reproduced
How does exponential growth occur?
when there are no environmental factors or population checks
How do environmental factors limit population size?
they result in differential survival and reproduction
What are biotic factors? Give some examples
other living organisms
predation, competition for resources and disease
What are abiotic factors? Give some examples
non-living parts of an environment
light availability, water supply and soil pH
What are environmental factors?
selection pressures
Define selection pressures
Factors that increase the chance of individuals with a specific phenotype surviving and reproducing over others
What happens when selection pressures act over several generations of a species?
can cause a change in the allele frequency and the phenotype frequency in a population
Define genetic drift
when there is a gradual change in allele frequencies in a small population due to chance and not natural selection
