What is Containment?
Preventing the spread of Communism.
What is Domino Theory?
Effect of countries falling to Communism and having a knock on effect to the countries around it.
Who is Ho Chi Minh?
Leader of the Communist Party.
Who is Diem?
The Leader of the capitalist Republic of South Vietnam, Americans said he is to corrupt to support.
Viet Cong?
Communist Group in Vietnam.
What was the Tonkin incident?
Northern Vietnamese torpedo boat attacked American torpedo boat in the Gulf of Tonkin, this gave the Americans an excuse to escalate the war further.
What is Gurerilla warfare?
Tactic to help defeat the Americans by not wearing uniform and going around in small groups. (Viet Cong tactics)
What was ‘Operation Rolling thunder’?
More bombs were dropped in this war then the whole of WW2.
What was ‘Search and Destroy’?
US method to find and destroy Viet Cong members ‘Scorched Earth Policy’.
Why did the USA become increasingly involved in Vietnam - Money?
- The Americans started pouring more and more money into the war and milatary equipmanet as they miss-interpreted about how much money it would cost to support the troops and the war effort.
Why did the USA become increasingly involved in Vietnam - difficult?
- Didn’t realize how difficult it would be to take over Vietnam, more troops needed etc.
Why did the USA become increasingly involved in Vietnam - communism?
- Americans are determined to stop Vietnam falling to communism, domino theory (other countries would follow), Johnson wanted to win.
Why did the USA become increasingly involved in Vietnam - Cold War?
- USSR were sponsoring the Vietnamese, didn’t want to let them win.
Why did the USA become increasingly involved in Vietnam - Popularity & Duty?
- Americans wanted to win to show that they were strong and that capitalism was the way forward. they felt it was there duty to fight to defend capitalism.
The main problems that the Americans faced in Vietnam?
- They were fighting an experienced and committed Guerrilla army.
- They did not fully understand the country - geography, language and culture.
- My Lai massacre led to an awareness that the rest of the US were not backing the army at all. This led to low morale
- They had expected a quick war.
- The quality of soldiers decreased and it ended up many soldiers being sent to Vietnam after very little training.
