  • They were fighting an experienced and committed Guerrilla army.
  • They did not fully understand the country - geography, language and culture.
  • My Lai massacre led to an awareness that the rest of the US were not backing the army at all. This led to low morale
  • They had expected a quick war.
  • The quality of soldiers decreased and it ended up many soldiers being sent to Vietnam after very little training.

What were Viet Cong tactics in the Vietnam War?

A
  • Conducted a campaign of terror against the South.
  • Used Guerilla warfare, they didn’t wear uniform and traveled round in small groups.
  • There aim was to ware down the enemy so they had weak morale.
  • They used complex tunneling so they could almost creep under the Americans. Some lived underground.
  • ‘Hearts and Minds’ tried to win over the support of the people so that they would support the campaign.
  • Used Jungle to there advantage.
  • Ruthless and refused to give in
  • Operated supply lines
  • Prepared to kill anyone and die for the cause.
  • They were defending there country.

    = Viet cong, they knew the terrain better.
    = The Americans were unsure who was Viet Cong.
    = Took them $400,000 to kill one Viet Cong becaue of this.
    = because they didn’t know who was Viet Cong they would kill innocent people making them look bad.
    = Tunneling and Guerilla warfare very effective.

What was the Tet Offensive?

A

In 1968 the Communists launched a major offensive. During the Tet New Year holiday, Viet Cong fighters attacked over 100 cities and other military targets. One Viet Cong commando unit tried to capture the Us embassy in Saigon for two days.

The Media were showing the most obscene pictures of the people that had been murdered by the USA in the massacres. As a result people began to protest against these massacres taking place there fore the government were forced to do something about it.

This was because of the fact that soldiers were coming back mentally ill because of the amount of people they had killed. seeing dead people was the norm for them.

Effects of the Mai Lai Masaca and Tet Offensive

A

the My Lai massacre showed Americans in a bad light which is why it really altered opinions on the war. The Tet Offensive suggested that the US forces were unprepared for war - it was humiliating for the Americans to be attacked in their own Embassy.
