Arguments For women getting the vote?
- Britain is not a true democracy.
- Improve mens sexual behavior if women equal.
- Both equal before god.
- Women vote in local elections.

Arguments against women getting vote?
- Womens place is in the Home, didn’t want to change nature.
- Women would not use it.
- Women do not fight in wars.
- Women ignorant to politics.
- Concerned about Violence of Suffragettes.

1897 - Millicent Fawcett, mainly middle class, peaceful, parliament campaigns. Allowed Men.
WSPU?
1903 - Emmeline Pankhurst, middle class, violent. No men.
WSPU campaign techniques?
- Heckled politicians
- Held marches
- Chained themselves to railings.
- Acid on Golf courses to spell ‘Votes for women’.
- Emily Davison ran out in front of the Kings horse at Derby in 1913.
- Set fire to buildings and burned post offices.
When were women given the vote?
1918.
Why really did the women get the vote?
- Conduct during the war.
Restrictions to 1918 vote?
Women over 21 didn’t get the vote until 1928, 1918 representation of the people act gave the vote to men over 21. the war didn’t get women equality.
The Representation of the people act?
Feb 1918, women over 30 who occupied property were allowed to have the vote. Was seen a success. Women under the age of 30, had to wait 10 years until they were allowed to vote at 21. This was done in 1928.
The Private Sphere?
Women - Children and helping community, the home.
The Public Sphere?
Men - Work, business and politics.
Arguments against spheres?
- Women could vote in local elections, they could be doctors and mayors.
How did violent methods help the suffragettes - YES?
- made front page news
- Inevitable, because of publicity.
- People began to accept, felt like they already had vote.
How did violent methods help the suffragettes - NO?
- Government claimed women to violent.
- Government did not want to give in to violence.
- Violence turned men away.
- Violence, women not responsible.
- 1913-14 NUWSS growing at expense of WSPU because of people turning away from violence.
What did Emily Davison do?
Emily Davison ran out in front of the Kings horse at Derby in 1913. She became a Martyr (Someone who is willing to die for there cause).
