topic 7: Plant transitions Flashcards
1
Q
brophytes
A
non-vasuclar plants
2
Q
Pteriodophytes group
A
a group of seedless vascular plants
3
Q
gymnosperms group
A
a group of seed plants that are vascular but do not have flowers
4
Q
angiosperms group
A
a group of flowering plants that are vascular
5
Q
which is the main plant of evolution
A
it was believed that all land plant evolved from charophytes
6
Q
What were the challenges that plants faced transitioning onto land from the aquatic setting
A
- they need more solid structures since they had they have to face gravity
- they needed to develop more specialized structure to allow for nutrient uptake and distribution (needed to develop roots systems and vascular tissue)
- needed to develop a way to minimize water loss and conserve water (developed a waterproof covering)
- needed to develop a method a way or reproduction that was not water reliant
7
Q
What were the benefits of plants transitioning to the land
A
- the plants have easier access to carbon dioxide
- gases also diffuse at a lot faster rate on land then they do in the water
- initially, moving to the land minimized the amount of competition along the species
8
Q
what are the main charactersitics of the bryophytes
A
- they are usually found in wet environments
- they do not have vascular tissues
-they do not have a waterproof coating - they have no true organs but has leaf-like structures
- all of the three subgroup found in this species goes through alternation of generations with a dominant gametophyte
