do we feel positively or negatively toward something

what stops us from engaging in leisure behaviours we’d life to do and even influence our preferences for leisure activities
Sociology
understand how leisure is connected to social life; the role leisure plays in society and its meaning in the broader social context
Sociologists
work to understand the behaviours and processes of individuals, groups, and institutions as they occur in particular social and cultural contexts (ex: political environments)

- functionalist approaches

Structural approaches
examine such variables as socio-economic status, education and demographic characteristics i their relation to leisure choice, preferences or constraints
Functionalist approaches
focuses on social functions of leisure. benefits of leisure are the focus; the goal is to understand the positive and negative outcomes associated with various leisure experiences.
Development approaches
emphasizes the evolution and changes in leisure throughout an individuals life cycle. looks at changing roles, obligations and expectations throughout life
Critical theory
teaches that knowledge is power. understanding the ways one is oppressed unable one to take action to change oppressive.

fuse theory and action. critical theories are normative, they serve to bring about change in the conditions that affect our lives
Feminist theory
feminist theorists argue that defining leisure as separate from work is limiting and ignores aspects of gender in social relations; individuals are gendered and the sexual division of labour is found in everyday life
Why use theory is leisure?
- to help access/identify relevant needs
- to be accountable and provide rationale for decisions
- to enhance outcomes for participants, agency, community
- to be able to communicate effectively with professionals
- to evaluate effectiveness of programs/services
Work-leisure theory
attitudes and practices can spill over or generalize into leisure time and alternatively an individual can compensate in leisure for work practices
