What is stress
particular relationship between the person and the environment that is appraised by the person as taxing or exceeding their resources and endangering their well being
Eustress
moderate or normal psychological stress interest as being positive for the person experiencing this
Distress
extreme sorrow, anxiety, or pain. interpreted usually as negative. (decrease performance)
What stresses us? (stressors)
- Environmental stressors (living situation)
- Social stressors (friends, family)
- Physiological stressors (illness, exercise)
- Psychological stressors (school, work, death)
3 phases of stress
- alarm reaction
- resistance
- exhaustion
Alarm reaction
when confronted by perceived threat, the brain immediately actives the body defence system
Resistance
once immediate threat passes, the body returns to its normal state
Exhaustion
if stress continues for long period ofttimes the body may simply run out of its supply of key response hormones and shut down
Common effects of stress on our body
headaches, muscle tension, chest pain, fatigue, sex drive, sleep problems
Common effects of stress on our mood
anxiety, restless, lack of motivation, feeling overwhelmed, irritable, depression
Common effects of stress on our behaviour
over or under eating, angry outbursts, drug or alcohol abuse, social withdrawals
