Antecedent
a boundary that existed in the natural landscape before settlement of the region took place
Examples: Pyrenees Mountains between Spain and France
Consequent
A type of subsequent boundary; occurs as a consequence of something; cultural
Example: the border between Austria and Hungary
Geometric
a boundary (often a straight line) drawn without regard for physical or cultural features
Example: 49th parallel serving as the border between the US and Canada
Relic
a boundary that no longer functions as an international border, yet its imprint remains on the cultural landscape
Example: The Berlin Wall
Subsequent
a boundary put in place after settlement of a region has already occured; often drawn to accomodate cultural differences.
Example: the boundary between Ireland and Northern Island
Superimposed
a boundary imposed on an area by an outside power, with little to no regard for existing population
Example: the Sykes-Picot Treaty
