Topic 38 Flashcards
Describe stochastic effects of radiation
Effects for which only the probability of occurence of damage depends on dose without threshold.
Considered to be heritable and carcinogenic
Describe deterministic effects.
Effects that apear after a latent period
A threshold dose is required to be reached to observe detrimental effects.
Above the threshold, severity of the effect depends on the dose.
Draw the dose-effect curves
Give the basic principles of radiation protection
Justification
Optimisation
Dose Limits
What is justification, as means of radiation protection?
To do more good than harm
What is Optimisation, as means of radiation protection?
ALARA
As Low As Reasonably Achievable
Making every effort to reduce risk to exposure
What are Dose Limits, as means of radiation protection?
Limits of dose not to be exceeded in industry
Draw the gas filled radiation detector
How do ionisation chambers, proportional counters and GM tubes compare?
The same design only with different voltage ranges
Describe the scintillation detector
Radiation releases and electron which multiplies in a photomultiplier chamber
These are then measured.
