Topic 25 Flashcards
What is the principle of a laser?
Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation
What is stimulated emission?
One atom emits a photon, this collides with a second atom in an excited state.
This stimulates the second atom to release a photon
Results in two coherent photons
What is an inverse population
More atoms in upper state than lower state
Material can be maintained which irradiated with light
Material can be maintained inversely by finding an intermediate excited state.
The properties of a laser
Monochromatic
Coherent
Directed (Parallel in nature)
Well focusable
Give the types of laser
Fixed/Tunable wavelength
Continuous/pulsed lasers
Give the medical use of lasers
Destruction of small size tissues, healing ulcers, cornea surgery
