Topic 3 - Non Biological Treatments - Behaviourist Flashcards
What is systematic desensitisation?
Replace the conditioned fear, which is maladaptive, with one of relaxation, which is an adaptive and desirable response
What were the three stages of systematic desensitisation?
Hierarchy of fearful situation - muscle relaxation techniques - continues systemically
What was the study in systematic desensitisation?
McGrath et al with Lucy - she had a fear of loud noises and associated objects - he taught her to imagine herself playing with her toys at home - gradually reduced her fear to a self-rating of 3 out of 10 down from 7 out of 10 for balloons and 9 out of 10 for party poppers
What is flooding?
Stimulus is presented directly - immediate fear response caused by Adrenalin on the nervous system is not sustainable for long and eventually the person will calm down - then associate the feelings of calm with the object rather than phobic resounds - can cause such pain that the phobia is reinforced rather than extinguished
What is aversion therapy?
Produce an unpleasant association - can be produced by giving electric shocks to cause aversion to the stimulus
