Topic 1 - Defining Abnormality Flashcards
What is statistical infrequency?
Any behaviour that is shown less often than the normal amount for that society can be regarded as abnormal simply because it is not the (statistical) norm for that society: it is abnormal in the sense of being rare
What are the problems with statistical infrequency?
Some ideas that are seen rare aren’t linked to mental illness eg. being a talented athlete - how rare is a behaviour before it becomes abnormal
What is failure to function adequately?
Rosenhan and Seligman defined living a normal life adequately as being able to hold down a job, maintain relationships, look after themselves and interact in society effectively. If someone is unable to do this they are seen as ‘abnormal’
What are the problems with failure to function adequately?
Lack of education means lack of job - choices could influence issues
What is deviation from social norms?
If they go against behaviours that are deemed by the society they live in to be ‘normal’ and ‘aceptable’
What are the problems with deviation from social norms?
We all do behaviours that can be deemed as abnormal - difference in time and place (could have affect on norm) - choices not abnormal
What is deviation from ideal mental health?
Having a positive self-image - being capable on growth and development - having independent thoughts and actions - having an accurate perception fo reality - being able to cope with demands and problems / stressful situations - maintaining positive relationships
What are the problems of deviation from ideal mental health?
Situations change - doesn’t mean you’re abnormal - ares of this can be interpreted differently from person to person
