Topic 2 - The Genetic Explanation of Mental Illness Flashcards
What does Genetic from Parents suggest?
Certain disorders could be passed from parents to children through genetic transmission
What did Gottesman et al show?
The increased risk if children have two parents with either bipolar disorder or schizophrenia compared to those with one parent or no parents with these disorders.
What did they find in the Gottesman and Shields study?
They found that if one twin had schizophrenia then there was a 58% chance of an identical (mono-zygotic)twin having it (however if they were not identical there was only 12% chance of a twin having it)
What is the evolution theory?
There are certain traits that ay in the past have enabled some people to survive while other people without these traits have dies. It is suggested that we have inherited traits that have a beneficial effect on out chances survival.
How does the evolution theory link to phobias?
People with fears might have had an evolutionary advantage that enabled them to survive and reproduce while people without these phobias may have died before they got a chance to reproduce
What was Ohman’s study?
They gave participants electric shocks at the same time they say pictures of wither snakes, houses, or human faces. It was easier to condition a fear response to the snakes than it was to either the houses of human faces, suggesting an inherited biological predisposition to fear snakes more.
What format of treatment is in the early stages of research?
Embryo manipulation to reduce the inheritance of genetic disorders by using genetic materials from three parents is in the early stages of research.
