Disorders grouped into ‘internalising’ and ‘externalising’

How common that disorder is and how it is diagnosed
Examples of sleep-wake disorders
Insomnia disorder, hyper somnolence disorder, nightmare disorder
Examples of neurodevelpmental disorders
Autistic spectrum disorder, ADHD, Tourette’s disorder
What are internalising disorders?
Those characterised by depressed mood, anxiety and related physiological and cognitive symptoms (expressed inwardly and mostly cause harm to the individual)
What are externalising disorders?
Symptoms that are expressed outwardly and can cause harm to others (eg. impulsive, disruptive conduct and substance use)
What are neurotic disorders?
The person knows they are affected by the illness, have insight into their situation, and are in touch with reality (eg. depression, anxiety)
What are psychotic disorders?
The person often has lost touch with reality, lacks insight and may not realise they are unwell (eg. schizophrenia)
What other information was included in the DSM 5 fo each of the disorders?
Diagnostic criteria such as the time frame of showing symptoms before diagnosing - gender related diagnostic issues - culture related diagnostic issues - co-morbidity (disorders frequently occur together) - prevalence
