What was the aim?
To see if mental hospitals in the USA in the early 1970s could tell the scene from the insane
How many people were the pseudo patients?

What symptoms did they say they had?
they heard an unfamiliar voice of the same sex saying ‘empty’, ‘hollow’ and ‘thud’
What happened once they were admitted?
They stopped simulating any symptoms and took part in regular ward activities, all the time writing notes about ward staff and patients
What were they diagnosed with?
Schizophenia
How many days did they remain is hospital?
For 7 to 52 days (average 19 days)
What happened when they were discharged?
It was with a diagnosis of schizophrenia ‘in remission’
How many of the patients voiced their suspicions?
35 out of the 118 patients (“You’re not crazy, “You’re a journalist or a professor”, “You’re checking up on the hospital”
Who could see the patient’s records?
Anyone
What was also seen in the hospitals?
Saw some of the ward orderlies being brutal to patients in full view of other patients but then stopping as soon as another member of staff approached
How much of their shift did the attendants spend outside of the cage (their ward office)?
11.3%
What was the total time spent with psychologists, psychiatrists etc on average?
6.8 minutes per day
What did the pseudopatients say to the staff in four of the hospitals?
“Pardon me, Mr/Mrs/Dr X, could you tell me when I will be presented at the stand meeting?”
What was recorded after the question was asked to the member of staff?
They recorded how staff responded to the request (ie. if they moved on with head averted, made eye contact, paused and chatted or stopped and talked)
