Q

What was mental context reinstatement?

A

Witnesses are asked to mentally take themselves back to the scene of the crime and imagine the noise, the smells, whether it was dark or light, who else was there etc.

Q

How was mental context reinstatement effective?

A

Milne showed that context reinstatement used alone obtains as much information from witnesses as the complete CI procedure although other psychological research into the effectiveness of context has produced mixed results

Q

What was report everything?

A

This is where the witness is given the instructions to recall without ‘screening, al the detains from the to-be-remembered event, even if they consider them irrelevant or only partially remember them

Q

How was Report everything effective?

A

Memon and Bull suggested this procedure can be important for putting together details from different witnesses to the same crime

Q

What is recall from a variety of different perspectives?

A

This technique tries to encourage the witness to place themselves in the shoes of the victim (if the witness is not a victim) or of another witness to report what they would have seen

Q

How was recall from a variety of different perspectives effective?

A

Could lead to witness fabricating data, Milne - can produce as much accurate info as the other techniques but does not increase the amount of info

Q

What is recall in different temporal orders?

A

Encourage witnesses to recall in a variety of orders, for example, from the end, the middle or from the most memorable event

Q

How was recall in different temporal orders effective?

A

More effective to recall in forward order once followed by reverse order, rather than to make two attempts at recall from the beginning

Q

What did they find relation to standard interviewing?

A

Not good for comparisons as they’re too varied and not standardised so meaningful data is impossible to collect

Q

What did they find in relation to guided memory interviews?

A

Relies on context reinstatement alone so its useful for comparisons against CI studies to deduce whether increased information from CI is a result of context reinstatement alone or a combination of componenets

Q

What did they find in relation to structures interviewing?

A

Relies on establishing a rapport, uses open questions and avoids interruptions but doesn’t use cognitive techniques so its good for showing importance of cognitive components.

16
Q

What did they find in relation to measures of memory?

A

Studies into effectiveness of CI show more information is recalled compared to SI techniques

17
Q

What is one suggestion for the findings regarding measures of memory?

A

SI techniques emphasise the need to be accurate so it’s not that witnesses remember more with CI, rather that they are encouraged to recall everything then being restricted to accurace

18
Q

What did they find in relation to quality of training?

A

Studies into effectiveness of CI and ECI have been hampered by differences in duration and quality of training given to officers

19
Q

What did they conclude in relation to quality of training?

A

Emphasis the need to deliver quality training, regularly practice interviewing techniques and receive feedback to ensure its used effectively and enhances retrieval

20
Q

What was the overall conclusion?

A

Although the CI has emerges as one of the most exciting developments over the last 10 years, many question remain unanswered. Eg. how to the various elements of the CI work? If there are effective components, what are they?
