Topic 2 - Dror - Reaearch With 27 Students Flashcards
What was the sample?
27 university student
What was the procedure?
The students (who were non-fingerprint experts) were given 96 pairs of fingerprints. Their task was to compare each finger print to its pair
How were the fingerprints split into 2?
Half the fingerprints were clear and relatively easy to match and the other half were more ambiguous (so top-down processes would become a factor)
What were the categories of the crimes that the fingerprints were from?
They ranged from low emotion (burglary) and others were high emotion (murder)
What were the results?
When participants were shown a high emotional case they were more likely to find a match between fingerprints (58%) compared to the low emotional cases (49%)
What was the other finding about the subliminal message?
When ‘guilty’ was flashed on the screen, the likelihood of finding a match between fingerprints rose to 66%
What does this study suggest?
Suggests that emotional context influenced fingerprint analysis
