What has lower activity in the prefrontal cortext been linked to?
Lower resting heart rates, which is in turn associated with aggression
What was the sample?
100 3-year-olds with a low resting heart rate - they were given the intervention
What was the sample matched with?
A control group
What was the three-part intervention?
Nutrition (balanced, cooked mean once a day), physical exercise (structured games, gym and free play), and cognitive stimulation (toys, arts, drama, and music were adapted)
What was shown at age 11?
The group who received the intervention showed better concentration, and had more mature brains than the control group
What was shown at age 17?
They showed significantly lower levels of conduct disorder (antisocial / criminal behaviour), were less cruel, less likely to start fights and bully others.
What happened in the follow-up study?
Another 100 children were given Omega-3 supplements once a day in form of juice drink for 6 months (control group were just given juice without Omega oils)
What was found from the follow-up study?
Parents reported lower levels of delinquency aggression and attention problems after end of interventions
