Topic 2.4.6 - Fertilisation in Plants Flashcards
What is the name for the male reproductive parts of a flower?
Stamen
What is the name for the female reproductive parts of a flower?
Carpels
What parts of the flower make up the stamen?
Anther
Filament
What parts of the flower make up the Carpel?
Ovary
Stigma
Style
What is self pollination and what does it result in?
Pollen lands on the stigma from the same plant.
Less robust plant
What is cross pollination and what does it result in?
Pollen from anthers lands on stigma of a different plant that is from the same species.
More robust plant.
What happens when a pollen grain lands on the stigma?
Pollen grain grows a pollen tubule which grows down the style.
Where does the pollen tube grow to and what happens next?
Grows to the ovary
Delivers pollen nucleus to ovule
What happens to the generative nucleus?
Divides by mitosis to form 2 male sperm nuclei
What happens when pollen tube reaches the ovary?
Tube nucleus degenerates
2 sperm nuclei enter
1 fertilises with egg nucleus to form a diploid zygote.
Other fuses with 2 polar nuclei to form a triploid endosperm.
What is the micropyle?
Entrance to the ovule
