1.3.2 - ATP Flashcards
structure of ATP
ribose sugar
3 phosphate groups
A nitrogenous base (adenine)
Where is the energy used to synthesise ATP from?
From the energy provided by respiration
What does ATP supply for cells?
An immediate supply of energy
What two reactions change the number of phosphates on ATP and ADP?
Condensation adds a phosphate to ADP.
Hydrolysis takes a phosphate from ATP.
What is the reversible reaction between ATP and ADP?
ATP + water — ADP + Pi
Properties of ATP
Small and soluble so easily transported
Only one phosphate has to be hydrolysed so is a quick release of energy.
Can’t pass out of a cell so is an immediate supply of energy
Examples of purines and pyrimidines.
Purines - adenine and guanine
Pyrimidines - cytosine, thymine and uracil
What is ATPase?
The enzyme that catalyses the breakdown of ATP
What is ATP synthase?
Catalyses the synthesis of ATP
