Topic 2- Cells And Control Flashcards
What are he stages of mitosis
Interphase Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase Cytokinesis
What happens to the cell during interphase
The sub-cellular structures duplicate
The DNA is duplicated
What happens to the cell during prophase
The membrane around the nucleus breaks down
The chromosomes fat and shorten (condense)
The spindle fibres start to form
What happens to the cell during metaphase
The spindle fibres gran the chromosomes and line them up on the equator of the cell
What happens to the cell during anaphase
The spindle fibres shorten and take the chromosomes to separate poles of the cell
What happens to the cell during telophase
Membrane form around each set of chromosome , become the nuclei for each of the new cells
What happens to the cells in cytokinesis
Cells fully separate and become two separate but identical cells
Why do multicellular organisms divide
To grow or replace cells that have been damaged
What type of reproduction is mitosis
Asexual
Are the cells identical or different after mitosis?
Identical
What can stem cells be used for in medicine
- Doctors use adult stem cells to sure some diseases eg sickle cell anaemia
- scientists have experienced with extracting stem cells form early embryos
- stem cells to create specialised cells to replace damaged ones
Risks of stem cells
Tumour development
Rejection
Disease transmission
What is cancer
A case of uncontrolled cell division
What are stem cells
Undifferentiated cells
Where can stem cells be found in adults
Bone marrow
