Topic 1.1.12 ( The concept of salvation ) Flashcards
Define atonement
Something which is done to pay for doing something wrong
God made the Jewish people do it every year. They had to make a sacrifice. The blood of a animal would bring the atonement between humans and God
Define salvation
Being saved from eternity in hell through repentances and Jesus’s death on the cross
What is repentance ?
Saying sorry to God
How is atonement related to Christianity
Christians relate this practice to understand Jesus’s crucifixion
His crucifixion provided a sacrifice to atone all human sin
The law
In the past , religious law had shown that people were sinful and imperfect. No one managed to obey all of the commandments no one could meet Gods standards
Hebrews told us that Jesus’s sacrifice was once and for all and that humans could be forgiven by God
Under the new covenant all people could receive forgiveness and the Holy spirit live with in them
Grace
For Christians this means that they no longer are saved by their own works or obedience to the law but through the grace of God
Define Grace
Unconditional love that God shows to people who do not deserve it
Redemption
They use the word redemption to describe what they believe God has done for them.
Christians believe salvation that god offers is actually him offering to pay their debt of sin
Repentance and forgiveness
Christians believe to be saved they need to say sorry to God for their sins and ask for forgiveness
They accept God’s help to live a good life. Gods help is brought to them by the holy spirit which lives within them
Sin
In the Bible Paul explained that sin first entered the world through Adam and eve. This sin brought death
humans continue to disobey God however humans offer eternal life in heaven because of Jesus’s death. His death is key to provide humans with redemption nothing else will get them their redemption
Different Christian views about salvation
Christians believe That being baptised and belonging to a church ( Sacraments of baptism and Eucharist )
Others believe in being saved is the result of specific experience known as conversion ( leaving a former life to start a new one following Jesus )
