Topic 1 - Polymers, Farming, Timber, Mining, Deforistation, Sustainability, Drilling Flashcards

1
Q

What are some environmental impacts of drilling

A

Dangerous chemicals used to extract the material can pollute the surrounding environment and kill wildlife
When the oils and gas are being drilled carbon dioxide is produced

Q

What are some social impacts of drilling

A

People who live in surrounding areas are at risk from leaking pipes that transport dangerous chemicals
Oil supplies have huge economic impacts on surrounding areas, fishing has to be stopped and tourism can be affected

Q

What are some environmental impacts of farming

A

Over 50% of usable land has been transformed into farming land
Rainforests are destroyed for plan oil plantations
The removal of large roofer trees causes large scale erosion

Q

What are some social impacts or farming

A

Farming uses around 70% of the worlds useable water

The soil that is blown away can be blown into important water sources and rivers, destroying important water sources

Q

Why are polymers important

A

They’re important as they allow for the mass manufacture of complex shapes and design that would be difficult or expensive if other materials had been used

16
Q

Why is timber reused and recycled

A

Timber is often reused in order to reduce the amount of trees that are cut down. Wash wood and timber is usually divide into pieces which are then loaded into a wood shredder which breaks up the pieces

17
Q

What is mining

A

The removal of minerals and metals from the earths surface for example iron ore, gold, silver and diamonds

18
Q

What are some social effects of mining

A

It can create a huge amount of employment and income for countries and groups of people
Fish are contaminated from the polluted water supplies
People who have eaten the chemicals can become ill
The contaminated water results in proper not being able to drink, wash

19
Q

What are some environmental impacts of mining

A

Chemicals end up in rivers contaminating water supplies
Trees and vegetation are cleared and burned
Trees are cut down in the local areas

20
Q

What is deforestation

A

The removal of t es over a large expanse of land

21
Q

What are some social impacts of deforestation

A

Indigenous people have fewer places to hunt, resulting in less food to eat
The people who are doing the cutting gain a profit for it

22
Q

What are some environment impacts of deforestation

A

Fewer trees and vegetation causes wild animals to have fewer places to live
