Q

What is toughness

A

The amount of energy a material can absorb without breaking. This is the opposite to brittleness. We measure a materials ability to absorb shock

Q

What are some examples of tension forces

A

A rope in tug of war competition as each side tries to pull the other side
Causes an object to be pulled apart
Causes an object to be stretched

A

Twisting a screw cap off the top of a bottle
Twisting forces that are applied to an object

Q

What are some examples of bending forces

A

Placing heavy books on a book shelf
Act angle to an object and make it bend. When an object does this it is under compression and tension at the same times compression on the top of the shelf and tension on the bottom of the shelf

17
Q

What are some examples of shear forces

A

Scissors by making one piece slide across the other and create two pieces
Cuts an object by pushing it sideways in opposite directions. Act across a material by acting to one another but not directly opposite each other
