Topic 1 - Classification Of Metals Flashcards
What are the 2 different groups metals are classified into?
Ferrous
Non ferrous
What are some properties of ferrous metals?
It’s found in the earths crust in rock know as haematite (iron ore)
Contains iron
It’s usually magnetic
Will rust
What are some types of ferrous metal
Cast iron
Low carbon steel
High carbon steel
What are some properties of cast iron
Hard surface
Brittle core
Strong
Can be cast into intricate shapes such a vices, roadside grids and manhole covers
What are some properties of low carbon steel
Good tensile strength Is malleable Poor resistance to corrosion Used in the automotive industry Steel structures
What are some properties of high carbon steel
Harder than low carbon steel but brittle
Used in manufacture of tools
What are some properties of non ferrous metals?
Found in the earths crust in a rock know as ore Doesn’t contain iron Isn’t magnetic Will not rust Malleable
What are some different types of non ferrous metals
Aluminium
Copper
Zinc
Tin
What are some properties of aluminium
Lightweight Soft Ductile Malleable Used for aircraft, canned drinks and bike frames
What are some properties of copper
Ductile
Malleable
Excellent thermal and electrical conductor
Easily soldered
Resistant to corrosion
Used for pipes and fittings in plumbing and manufacture of wire
What are some properties of zinc
Highly resistant to corrosion, low melting point, easily worked, weak, pure metal
Used as coating on steel to protect against corrosion
Used in die casting
What are some properties of tin
Highly resistant to corrosion Low melting point Easily worked Weak Pure metal Used as a coating on steel Used as a coating on food cans and used in soft solder
What are an alloy
A mixture of two or more metals that are combined to improve the mechanical or physical property of the original metal
What are the 2 categories alloys are divided into
Ferrous
Non ferrous
What is an example of a ferrous alloy
Stainless steel
