Topic 1 - Cells and Organisation of Living Things Flashcards
Sensitivity
The detection of changes (stimuli) in the surroundings by a living organism
Respiration
The chemical process in which glucose is broken down, releasing energy
Movement
A change of position. All organisms move.
- Animals move to locate food and run from danger
- Plants move their leaves
- Movement occurs inside cells
Homeostasis
The maintenance of a constant internal environment, such as body water content and body temperature
Growth
The permanent increase in body size and mass of an organism
Nutrition
The means of obtaining food, which provides energy living organisms need for the processes they carry out
Reproduction
The process of making more of the same kind of organism. This ensures that offspring take the place of organism when it dies.
Excretion
The removal of metabolic waste substances produced from chemical reactions inside the body
Cell
The basic building block of all living organisms
