Topic 1 Flashcards
What are the three main components of biodiversity?
Genetic diversity, species diversity and ecosystem diversity
What is genetic diversity?
The genetic variation within a population and between populations within a species
What is species diversity?
All of the organisms in an area
What is ecosystem diversity?
The variety of different habitats in a region, and their patterns across the landscape
What are the four ecosystem services?
Provisioning services, supporting services, regulating services and cultural services
What are the provisioning services?
The products we obtain from nature
What are the supporting services?
Things critical to the biosphere
What are the regulating services?
Benefits human receive beyond raw materials
What are the cultural services?
Intangible cultural and spiritual benefits
What describes when a species exists nowhere?
Extinction
What describes a species that no longer exists in a defined geographic region but that can be found elsewhere?
Extirpation
What are the four things that cause extinction/extirpation?
Habitat destruction, introduced species, overharvesting or global climate change
