topic 1 Flashcards
cell theory
cells are the basic structural and functional units of all living things
define metabolism
ALL chemical reactions that happen inside a cell in order to keep it alive and functioning correctly
define catabolism
breaking down
-larger molecules are broken down into smaller ones
-involves releasing energy
types of compounds involved in metabolism
they are classified as organic or inorganic
-organic: large molecules (more than 5-6 atoms) and contains CARBON
eg. amino acids
-inorganic: small and/or do not contain CARBON
eg. carbon dioxide
important inorganic compounds
water, vitamins, minerals, oxygen and carbon dioxide
define carbohydrates
always contain C, O and H
always twice as much hydrogens and oxygens
-they are an important source of energy for cells (eg.glucose)
the C,H,O are always arranged in rings
they can be classified according to how many rings they contain
types of carbohydrates:
monosaccharides
one simple sugar ring
what is an enzyme
a biological catalyst
they speed up a reaction but are not used up in a reaction
they lower the activation energy needed for collisions to be successful, therefore more particles have enough energy to react, making the reaction to occur at a faster rate.
