SARIs (serotonin receptor antagonists and reuptake inhibitors): increase amount of active serotonin in the CNS by blocking function of seotonin transporter proteins. acts as antagonists to inhibit certain serotonin receptor (5HT2a recpetor), block func of serotonin transporter protein, resuling in higher amount of active serononin in CNS

trazodone: contraindications
- liver, kidney, heart disease
- recent heart attack
- bleeding/blood clotting disorder
- seizures, epilepsy
- drug addiction, bipolar disorder
- suicidal thoughts, manic depression
- narrow-angle glaucoma
- long QT syndrome
trazodone: dosaging
- 18 and under cannot get it w/o parent consent
- adults w/ depression (tab form): start @ 150mg/day, can increase by 50mg every 3-4 days
- inpatient: 600mg/day
- outpatient: 400 mg/day
trazodone: side effects
nausea, diarrhea, drowsiness, blurred vision, weight change, body pain, dry mouth, stuffy nose, change in sexual activity
trazodone: adverse affects
flutter/fast heartbeat, short breaths, sudden dizziness, unusual thoughts, brusing, bleeding, low sodium, slurred speech, no coordination, fever, twitching

used to treat narcolepsy and ADHD by raising bp, bt, and hr
