Tools for Network Hardware etc Flashcards
What are cable crimpers used for?
To pinch/crimp connectors onto a wire/cable.
For example crimping a cat 5e (up to 1000Mbps /1Gb) ethernet connector onto a cat 5 wire.
You need to use a specific connector version for a specific wire category/type.
What is a WiFi analyser?
A device or app that monitors every frequency and specialises in 802.11 (WiFi) analysis to find unused channels/frequency ranges and where problems may be.
Tone generator/Toner probe?
A way of testing where a wire goes/trace a wire in a bundle of wires. A tone generator sends an analogue sound to the wire and then an inductive probe that plays/hears the tone when it is close (not even touching) the copper cable.
Fox and Hare.
What’s a Punch down tool for?
Used to “punch” push a wire into a wiring block of a punch-down block (66 block, 110 block).
It also trims the wire as it punches it down.
Cable tester?
Tests which pin is connected to which pin on either end of a cable/whether a connection is made/whether there is a crossed wire.
What is a loopback plug for?
Testing physical ports on a device - spoofs the port into thinking information is being transferred out and directly back in to it to see if they are working properly.
What do network taps do?
Network taps are hardware devices which allow you to access the data flowing across a computer network non-intrusively (passively). They are used to monitor for network intrusion detection, packet sniffing and general monitoring/collection of data.
TAP - Test Access Point.
What is a router?
Routes network traffic to devices on a network.
