Tools and Equipment Flashcards
The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) uses two main types of tools
Basic (all hand tools in the CFD are categorized as basic) and specialized (include more complex power equipment).
Four types of basic tools and equipment
- Protective (clothing, respiratory, traffic warning devices, and electrical) - Assorted multi-use hand tools
- Forcible entry
- Salvage and overhaul
CFD uses three types of tape to indicate
Red tape - Full PPE hot zone
Yellow tape - Do not cross
Chevron tape - Absolutely no one is to enter regardless of PPE and training.
Cutters
Lino knife (banana knife or hook axe)
Scissors
Side cutters
Tin snips
Utility knife
Pliers, Wrenches, and Screwdrivers
Allen wrenches
Channel lock pliers
Slip joint pliers
Cold chisel (meaning that they are not used in conjunction with heating torches. When using the cold chisel, you want to use a Ball-peen Hammer from the toolbox)
Crescent wrench (8”/12”)
Linesman heavy-duty cutting pliers
Needle long nose pliers
Pipe wrench
Large single-tip screwdriver
Ratchet and socket set
Multi-bit screwdriver
Vise grip pliers
Natural gas vice grip pliers
Hammers
Ball-peen hammer
Claw hammer
Dead blow hammer
Lights and Cords
Flood light
Hand cord reels
Portable spotlight
Show-me light (yellow)
Survivor light (red)
Tripod light
Leak sealing tools
Absorbent pads - CFD carries two types, an Oil only or hydrocarbon absorbent pad (White) known as hydrophobic. It does not absorb water. A Universal absorbent pad (grey) will absorb hydrocarbons and water known as hydrophilic.

- Pre-hospital care
Two types of kickback that can be encountered with the improper use of a chainsaw
Rotational - occurs when the chain at the upper section of the nose is suddenly stopped
Linear - Push reaction. It occurs if the saw blade is buried in the cut when the cut closes and thereby pinches the chain along the top rails of the bar
Chain break
The chain brake is designed to stop the rotation of the chain in less than 1/12 of a second. 3 positions. Forward break is engaged, middle neutral, and closer disengaged break
Chain tension
Proper chain tension is a key factor in reducing carbide breakage and increasing the life of the guide bar. To check the tension, pull the chain at the midpoint away from the bottom rails until the drive link barely clears the rail. When you let go, the chain should snap back into place.
Stihl chainsaw oil
It is important to know that the Stihl chainsaw does not require different mixtures it is just a 50:1 ratio.
Trash hook
The tool is a valuable asset for ventilation, overhaul, arson investigation and roof operations. The sharp tines of the rake will penetrate and shatter glass without any problem. Once the glass is broken, the wide head of the rake can be used to remove all the remaining window sash.
