What is the Centor Criteria?
A
It is a set of criteria used to identify the likelihood of bacterial infection in adult patients who complain of sore throat.

- (3-14years +1 point)
- (15-44 years 0 points)
- (> or equal to 45 years -1 point)
- Exudate or swelling on Tonsils
- Tender/swollen anterior cervical lymph nodes
- Fever (Temp >38C)
- Abscence of cough

What bacteria is most commonly the cause of bacterial Pharyngitis?
A
Group A Beta Haemolytic Streptococcal infection.

How do you treated according to the Centor Score?
A
- -1 to 1 - No antibiotics
- 2 or 3 points - Throat culture and antibiotics.
- 4 -5 points - Treat with antibiotics.

Should the Centor Criteria be used in children?
A
It was shown to be ineffective in predicting Group A Beta-Haemolytic Step in children.

What are some complications of tonsilitis?
A
- Otitis media
- Quisy - peritonsilar abscess
- Rheumatic fever and glomerulonephritis ver rarely.

What are some other reasons for tonsillectomy?
A
- Recurrent febrile convulsions secondary to episodes of tonsillitis
- Obstructive sleep apnoea, stridor or dysphagia secondary to enlarged tonsils
- Peritonsillar abscess (quinsy) if unresponsive to standard treatment

What are some complciations of tonsillectomy?
A
- Primary (< 24 hours): haemorrhage in 2-3% (most commonly due to inadequate haemostasis), pain
- Secondary (24 hours to 10 days): haemorrhage (most commonly due to infection), pain

What are SIGNs criteria for referral for tonsilectomy?
A
- Sore throats are due to acute tonsillitis
- The episodes of sore throat are disabling and prevent normal functioning
- Seven or more well documented, clinically significant, adequately treated sore throats in the preceding year
- Five or more such episodes in each of the preceding two years
- Three or more such episodes in each of the preceding three years
