What is a cholesteatoma?
A
It is a collection of squamous epithelium that is ‘trapped’ within the skull base causing local destruction.

What age is it most common in?
A
10-20 years.

What are the two main features of cholesteatoma?
A
- Foul smelling discharge
- Hearing loss

What are some other features of cholesteatoma?
A
- Vertigo
- Facial nerve palsy
- Cerebellopontine angle syndrome (caused by a space occupying lesion at the junction of the cerebellum and the pons.)

What is the classic sign of cholesteatoma on otoscopy?
A
“Attic crust” - seen in the uppermost part of the ear drum
